NAKURU MUNICIPALITY
|
|
Nakuru enjoys a diversity of geographical and ecological features: to the South and adjacent to the town, lies Lake Nakuru National Park, wetland of global significance; to the West is the Mau Escarpment, a water tower of national importance; to the North is the extinct 8-12 km wide Menengai Crater, one of the largest craters in the world. Nakuru is the main town within the area of Nakuru County and the fourth largest in Kenya with around half a million inhabitants in 80,000 households. For the last three decades, the population has been growing at a rate of 10% per year. To accommodate the growing population, the town’s boundaries have been progressively extended and it presently occupies an area of 290 km2, extended from 262 km2. It is a vibrant and cosmopolitan town, with a population originating from all the ethnic groups around the country. The town was founded in 1904 as a railway outpost, 160 km north-west of Nairobi at 0017S and 36004E. It has its own Municipal Council, independent of the County Council. It is located along the East-West transport highway across the country, linking the Kenyan coast with the Lake Victoria region and nighbouring Uganda. It is situated at an altitude of 1850 m above sea level on a remarkable and overwhelming setting, between the Menengai Crater and Lake Nakuru, home of famous flamingoes. Nakuru is one of the main agricultural centres of Kenya, surrounded by the vast and rich farmlands of Nakuru County. A strong and vibrant manufacturing and service industry is focused on the agriculture sector: there are large agro-chemicals and dairy processing plants, textile manufacturers, large-scale maize storage facilities, farm equipment dealers and workshops, veterinary services and much more. Nakuru Town also hosts the Rift Valley Province Administration Headquarters. Nakuru Municipality has four locations, five sub-locations and 80,000 households. The estimated populations density of Nakuru Municipality us 974/km2, with most of the people living in the South-West part of Nakuru town, in the neighbourhoods Kaptembwa, Langalanga, Ponda Mali and Mwariki. These are the neighbourhoods with low-cost housing. Residential areas account for 70% of the township’s built-up area outside the park and is followed by industrial and commercial land use, which accounts for 18% of the area.
